PlotWrite and Royal Road's AI rules

Short version: PlotWrite's memory, checks and planning are "back-office" help, which Royal Road says you don't need to mention. If you paste AI-written text into a chapter, Royal Road asks for an AI tag.

Last checked 5 October 2026. Rules can change, so read the source before you publish. This is our reading of the rules, not Royal Road's or Amazon's official word.

    What Royal Road says

"While you do not need to mention any 'back-office' assistance by an AI, such as brainstorming or research, you do need to mention it when you copy the text."
Royal Road AI-text policy (blog #57)(opens in a new tab)

Royal Road's knowledge base defines the two tags:

"AI-Assisted: The author has used an AI tool for editing or proofreading… may use the AI's voice and tone. There may be some negligible amount of snippets generated by AI." "AI-Generated: The story was generated using an AI tool; the author prompted and directed the process, and edited the result."
Content Guidelines, A.I. Content (knowledge base 114)(opens in a new tab)
"For novels that contain a negligible amount of AI-generated snippets, you may tag them 'AI-assisted' rather than AI-generated content. But, please add a warning in the author notes on the chapter with the AI-Generated content."

Spell-check and Grammarly-style suggestions that keep your voice are outside the policy: no tag.

Every PlotWrite tool, tag or no tag

    No tag needed (back-office)

These read your story and give you notes, checks and plans. The prose stays yours.

    • Story brainReads your chapters and remembers characters, places, items and rules.
    • Stat sheetsTracks levels, skills, items and numbers as they change.
    • Facts timelineWhat was true at each chapter.
    • Canon checkFlags contradictions with what you've written. You write the fix.
    • InboxNew facts for you to confirm or reject.
    • In-BetweenTracks open threads and promises, and suggests moments to plan.
    • PlanArcs, beats and your outline.
    • Brainstorm chat (ideas only)Talking ideas through is brainstorming.
    • Craft analysesSoul check, Resonance and the Reaction map read your story and report.
    • Style DNA learningLearns how you write from your own chapters.

Royal Road asks for an AI tag if you paste AI-written text

These write prose. Using the text in a chapter means "AI-Generated", or "AI-Assisted" plus a note in that chapter's author notes if it's only a negligible amount. Trying them and throwing the text away needs no tag.

    • Draft with AIWrites a full chapter draft from your beats.
    • Auto-writeDrafts several chapters in a row.
    • Ask AI: Continue, Next beat, Write this beat, Write the scene, Scene endingWrites new prose at your cursor.
    • Ask AI: Rewrite, Expand, Shorten, Describe, CustomRewrites text you selected, in the AI's words.
    • Connector draftsA chapter ChatGPT or Claude writes through the PlotWrite connector.
    • Chat text you insert into a chapterThe chat's words, pasted as prose.

The same goes for anything from a no-tag tool that you copy word for word, like a canon check's suggested fix or a line from the chat. If the words came from the AI and went into your chapter, it counts as copied text.

    The Writathon is stricter

"The story can't be AI-generated. The story can't be an AI-assisted translation. The idea is that you personally need to write 55,555 words."
Writathon rules (knowledge base 93)(opens in a new tab)

Writing for the Writathon? Turn on tag-free mode (below) so the tools that write prose are out of the way. Story brain, canon check, Plan and the chat for ideas all stay.

    Amazon KDP's AI disclosure

"If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered 'AI-generated,' even if you applied substantial edits afterwards."
KDP content guidelines(opens in a new tab)
"If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered 'AI-assisted' and not 'AI-generated.'"
KDP content guidelines(opens in a new tab)

KDP asks you to disclose AI-generated content, not AI-assisted content. So chapters from Draft with AI or Auto-write need disclosing when you publish on Kindle, even after heavy editing. Chapters you wrote yourself and checked with PlotWrite don't.

    Tag-free mode

One switch hides every tool that writes prose for you: Draft with AI, Auto-write, the Ask AI commands that write or rewrite text, and inserting chat answers into a chapter. What's left is the back-office: Story brain, stat sheets, facts, canon check, Inbox, In-Between, Plan, the chat for ideas, Craft and Style DNA.

Turn it on in Settings → Writing → Tag-free mode. You can switch it off again any time.
