plotwrite.ink vs NovelCrafter — Built From Your Chapters vs Filled In by Hand

Updated · By the PlotWrite team

Choose NovelCrafter if you want a mature, flexible writing app with a large community and are happy to fill in your Codex by hand. Choose PlotWrite if you write a long LitRPG or cultivation serial on Royal Road and want a Story brain built from your chapters, with stats timed by chapter and contradiction checks.

NovelCrafter builds a powerful Codex, but you fill it in by hand. PlotWrite is the AI that reads your story, not the one that writes it: its Story brain is built from the chapters you've already written, and it catches contradictions before your readers do.

The question isn't which tool is better. The question is: which tool helps you write consistently enough to build a Royal Road audience and earn from Patreon? Here's an honest comparison.

NovelCrafter is a great tool. Here's an honest look at how plotwrite.ink is different — and who each tool is best for.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between PlotWrite and NovelCrafter?

NovelCrafter's Codex is filled in by hand. PlotWrite builds its Story brain from chapters you have already written, reading them on your own AI, and you approve each proposed fact in the Inbox. PlotWrite also times facts by chapter and runs a canon check for contradictions.

Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription with NovelCrafter?

No. NovelCrafter's FAQ says flat-rate subscriptions such as ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro cannot be used inside it. PlotWrite offers a connector (www.plotwrite.ink/mcp) so you can use your existing ChatGPT or Claude subscription, plus OpenRouter, your own API key or a local model in LM Studio.

Does NovelCrafter track LitRPG stats by chapter?

Not as a built-in feature. Its Codex can hold stats as notes, but there are no stat sheets showing a character as of chapter N. PlotWrite shows LitRPG stat sheets as of any chapter, with what changed since the previous one.

Do I need an AI tag on Royal Road if I use PlotWrite?

Not for memory, consistency checks and planning, which count as back-office help under Royal Road's AI policy. Pasting AI-written prose into a chapter does mean Royal Road asks for an AI tag. PlotWrite's drafting tools are optional.

Does PlotWrite have a free trial?

Yes. PlotWrite has a 7-day free trial with no card and everything included. NovelCrafter advertises a 21-day free trial on its pricing page. PlotWrite paid plans are Storyteller at $14/month and Architect at $24/month.
