How many realms should a cultivation system have?
Pick 5–9 named realms. Each realm has a clear power ceiling and a clear breakthrough condition. Write this down from chapter 1, and keep track of which realm each character holds as of which chapter. In PlotWrite, that's a Story brain page with facts timed by chapter ("Silver rank from ch 9"), so a rank can't quietly go backwards. Authors who add realms mid-story to 'reach a higher tier' lose reader trust — it reads as inflation.

When should the first breakthrough happen?
Land the protagonist's first realm breakthrough between chapter 8 and 12. Too early and the system feels weightless; too late and readers haven't seen progression yet. The breakthrough should be a complete narrative event — challenge, decision, cost, payoff.
Why does a cultivation story need a sect?
Sect politics — rival disciples, elder factions, sect missions — provide infinite mid-arc structure. They also explain why the protagonist gains resources and meets new enemies. Skip sect structure and you're constantly inventing reasons for plot to happen.

What should a breakthrough cost the hero?
Every breakthrough costs something the reader sees: pills, time, blood, relationships, sanity. Costless cultivation reads as cheating. The cost is what makes the next breakthrough feel earned.
