Why do readers leave at the end of an arc?
Because the arc has paid off and nothing is pulling them forward. Reader brain: 'arc resolved → satisfied → close tab → maybe come back.' That 'maybe' is your retention curve dying. The fix is making the close ALSO be an open.
What is the 3-chapter overlap?
It means planting a seed for the next arc three chapters before the current arc resolves. Mysterious letter. New character glimpsed. Distant explosion. When the arc closes, the seed is ready to bloom — readers stay because they're already invested in what's next.
How should an arc end?
On a launch, never a breather. 'And so they returned home' is the wrong final beat. The final beat of an arc should be 'and as they walked through the gate, a shadow rose from the well.' Cliff into the next arc, every time. For the chapter-level mechanics, see Cliffhangers readers can't skip and the pacing and cliffhanger formula.

How do you track arc transitions in your Plan?
Mark arc boundaries explicitly in PlotWrite's Plan, and keep the seeds you planted as threads in the In-Between. It warns you when a thread goes quiet, so a promise made three chapters before the arc closes doesn't get dropped in the hand-off. Whether you draft by hand or with an AI tool, a transition written without those markers tends to get compressed.
