What makes a Royal Road cover convert?
Three things: an instant genre signal, a single focal point and a title readable at thumbnail size. Everything else is polish. The sections below take them one at a time.
Rule 1: instant genre signal
A browser glances at your cover for a moment before scrolling, so it must announce the genre at once. LitRPG: status windows, glowing UI, gear-clad MC. Cultivation: robes, mountains, qi effects. Romance: two figures, tension pose. Don't be subtle. Subtle loses. If you write LitRPG or progression fantasy, look at the current top of your genre's lists and match the visual language.
Rule 2: single focal point
One subject, dominant. Multi-character covers look amateur at thumbnail size. Pick the MC, frame them, blow out the background.
Rule 3: is your title readable at thumbnail size?
Open Royal Road on mobile. Squint. Can you read your title? If not, redesign. Bold, sans-serif, high-contrast.

What kills click-through?
Stock-art faces. Default fantasy maps. Comic Sans (yes, this still happens). Five characters trying to fit. Generic 'epic landscape' with no human figure.
Can you use an AI-generated cover on Royal Road?
Check Royal Road's current AI policy before you do, because rules about AI content change. Whatever the tool, the cover still has to pass the three rules above. Our Royal Road AI policy page explains what the policy asks of authors, and a strong cover only gets the click: your chapter 1 has to keep the reader.
