    For progression fantasy authors

Every breakthrough earned. Every power tier where you left it.

Progression fantasy lives on the climb. PlotWrite keeps each character's tier, techniques and rivalries as facts timed by chapter, shows every thread from A to B, and checks new chapters against what was true before you post.

The AI that reads your story, not the AI that writes it.

The In-Between swimlanes: four threads (Climb the Hollow Spire, Kael vs Dorian Hale, Kael and Sera, From debt to duty) across chapters 1 to 16, with a dot for each chapter that moved them and dashed rings for planned beats.
One thread, Climb the Hollow Spire: A, an Iron-rank scavenger drowning in the Ashfall Tithe; now, Silver rank at the Ninth Floor gate; B, clears the Ninth Floor and breaks the Tithe. It last moved in chapter 12 and should move about every 2 chapters.

The In-Between on a made-up sample serial, Ashfall Ascendant: the climb, the rivalry, the slow-burn romance and the debt, chapter by chapter. Your tiers and threads can be called anything.

    The problem

    Where the climb goes wrong.

Readers stay for growth they can feel. When the power scale wobbles or the training happens off the page, they notice, and the reviews say the growth feels meaningless.
    • Power scaling slips

A fight needs a closer finish, so someone a full tier below lands a blow your own rules say they can't.

Ch 52Even at full strength, a Third Tier can't touch a Fifth.

Ch 88The Third Tier guard knocked her clean off her feet.

    • The training arc skips the training

The MC goes into seclusion weak and walks out two tiers higher. Nothing on the page showed how, so it doesn't feel earned.

Ch 60Three months, she told herself. Three months to break through.

Ch 61She stepped out of the cave at Fifth Tier.

    • The rival goes quiet

The rival who drove the first arc hasn't appeared in forty chapters, and their tier never moved while the MC climbed three.

Ch 23Tavin swore he'd reach Gold before she did.

Ch 71Tavin? She hadn't thought about him in months.

Made-up examples of the slips this genre makes.

    How PlotWrite helps

How PlotWrite keeps the climb honest.

A memory of every tier and technique by chapter, a check that catches the power scale slipping, and a plan for the in-between of growth.

Power tiers as of any chapter

A timeline for every tier, technique and title.

Each character's tier is a fact with the chapter it became true, so a later breakthrough never leaks into an earlier chapter, and you can see the whole cast as it stood at chapter 88.

    • Tier, techniques, injuries and allegiances, each with its chapter and its source line.
    • The full history of a character's climb, from the first tier to now.
    • Soft systems work too: no numbers needed, just what's true and since when.
Kael Varro's level and rank history in the story brain: level 21 from chapter 11 (18 in chapters 8 to 10, 12 in 4 to 7, 7 in 1 to 3), and rank Silver from chapter 9 (Bronze in 5 to 8, Iron in 1 to 4). Below, his stats with their own history.
A graph of Kael's connections: Sera Vael, Brann Coldwater, Dorian Hale, Hollow Spire, Cinderwatch and his skills.

    Canon check

    Catches the power scale slipping.

Check a chapter and PlotWrite compares it with what was true at that point: a tier that went backwards, a technique used before it was learned, a rule about tiers that a fight just broke.

    • Both quotes side by side: this chapter, and the earlier line it contradicts.
    • Fixes previewed as a change, never applied without you.
    • Meant it? Mark it intentional and it stops flagging.
The Inbox with a high-severity canon issue: chapter 12 says Kael flashed his Bronze badge, while earlier canon from chapter 9 says the badge in his palm was silver now.
The previewed fix: Bronze is struck out and Silver put in its place, before anything changes in the chapter.

    The In-Between

    The in-between of growth, planned.

The climb, the rivalry, the mentor and the slow-burn romance all move a little every chapter. Plan the beats that get each thread from A to B, so the breakthrough has a road to it.

    • Beats for each step of a training arc, each tied to a chapter, moved from Idea to Approved to Used.
    • A brainstorm chat that has read your story brain: which tier, which rival, which thread is quiet.
    • A nudge in your Inbox when your rival hasn't shown up in a while.
The Plan board in three columns, Idea, Approved and Used: beats each tied to a chapter and an arc.
The chat beside the editor suggests three ways the next chapter could move a thread, and lists what it looked at in the story brain.

    The in-between of growth

Readers don't pay for the breakthrough. They pay for the climb to it.

A story is getting from A to B. In progression fantasy the in-between is the training, the losses and the small wins that make the next tier feel deserved.
    • Training arcs

Make the months in seclusion show on the page.

      • A thread from "can't break through" to "Fifth Tier", with planned beats between.
      • Each beat tied to a chapter, so the climb is spread out, not crammed into one.
    • Rivalries

      Keep the rival climbing too.

      • The rival's own tier, timed by chapter.
      • A nudge when the rivalry thread hasn't moved in a while.
    • Breakthroughs

Land the big moment, then keep it true.

      • The new tier becomes canon from that chapter on.
      • The canon check holds every later fight to it.

    Royal Road's AI policy

The AI that reads your story, not the AI that writes it.

Royal Road says you don't need to mention back-office help from an AI, like brainstorming or research, and that you do need to tag text an AI wrote. Memory, checks and planning never put a word in your chapters. Drafting is there if you want it, and we'll tell you plainly when it means a tag.

Every feature mapped to the policy The tag rules, explained

    Back-office: no tag

    • The story brain and stat sheets
    • The canon check and the Inbox
    • The In-Between, Plan and the brainstorm chat

    Pasted AI prose: tag it

    • Draft with AI and Auto-write
    • AI rewrites of your paragraphs, used a lot

Optional: nothing is drafted unless you ask. Royal Road decides the rules and can change them.

    Questions

    Progression fantasy writers ask

My magic system has no numbers. Is PlotWrite still useful?
Yes. Most of what breaks in progression fantasy isn't arithmetic. It's a tier that slipped, a technique that changed what it does, or a rival who stopped climbing. PlotWrite keeps those as facts timed by chapter and checks new chapters against them, with or without numbers.
How does PlotWrite help with training arcs?
The In-Between turns a training arc into a thread from A (where the character is) to B (the breakthrough), with planned beats in between, each tied to a chapter. You can see when a thread hasn't moved, and plan the steps that make the breakthrough feel earned.
I'm already 200 chapters in. Do I have to type everything in?
No. Paste or upload the chapters you've posted (.txt or .md) and PlotWrite splits them at the chapter headings. Then it reads them on your AI and proposes facts, each with the line it came from. You approve them in the Inbox. Nothing becomes canon until you say so.
Do I have to tag my story as AI on Royal Road if I use PlotWrite?
Not for the story brain, the canon check or planning. Royal Road's AI policy says you don't need to mention back-office assistance such as brainstorming or research, and you do need to say so when you copy AI-written text into your story. PlotWrite's memory, checks and plans never put words in your chapters. If you paste prose from Draft with AI or Auto-write into a chapter, tag it the way Royal Road asks. Rules can change, so check Royal Road's current policy before you publish.
Do I need an API key or AI credits?
No. Add PlotWrite as a connector in Claude or ChatGPT and sign in once: your existing plan runs the model, and PlotWrite gives it your chapters and story brain. You can also connect OpenRouter in one click, paste an API key, or run a model on your own computer with LM Studio. PlotWrite never charges for AI.
