How to Fix Canon Contradictions Without Re-Reading 50 Chapters

7 min read Updated By the PlotWrite team

To fix canon contradictions without re-reading, gather every character, place and stat fact into one reference, compare each chapter against it, then triage the list. Repair the 3-5 errors readers will notice, retcon or explain the rest, and run a continuity check on every new chapter.

You don't have time to re-read 50 chapters every time a reader points out a continuity error. Here's the workflow that compresses three days into a much shorter session.

    TL;DR

    • Re-reading 50 chapters takes a weekend and still misses contradictions.
    • A canon check reads your chapters against your story brain and lists the contradictions, with both quotes side by side.
    • Fix the top 3-5 contradictions; recategorize the rest as 'reveal' or 'character lying'.
    • Most contradictions are stat/location/relationship, not plot. Cheap to repair.
    • PlotWrite reads your story; it doesn't write it. Its Canon check runs this scan on your own AI, and you approve every fix. Start your free trial to try it on your serial.

Step 1: How do you build a canonical story brain from existing chapters?

Run a pass over your chapters that pulls character facts, location states, timeline anchors, and progression milestones into one place, because you can't fix what you can't see. In PlotWrite that place is the story brain: a page per character, place, item and skill, built from the chapters you've already written. Facts are timed by chapter ("Silver rank from ch 9"), and anything it proposes waits in your Inbox for approval.

Step 2: How do you find contradictions across 50 chapters?

Compare every chapter back against what the story brain knows, to surface where it deviates. You'll get a list of contradictions: a rank going backwards, a dead character walking, a brother becoming a cousin, the wrong location. Each one shows both quotes side by side. 'Character relationship inversion' beats 'eye color changed,' so focus on the top tier.

Step 3: Which contradictions should you fix, retcon, or absorb?

Three options per contradiction. FIX: small in-place edit (Killian was always coworker, never brother). PlotWrite can offer a one-click fix previewed as a diff, so you see exactly what changes before you accept. RETCON: write a short scene that explains the change ('Killian's promotion came through last week'). ABSORB: declare the character was lying or unreliable narrator. Don't fix everything. Pick the 3-5 readers will notice.

Step 4: How do you stop new contradictions after the repair?

Treat the repaired facts as settled, then run the Check chapter sheet (Continuity, Heart, Threads) on each new chapter before you publish. New contradictions become much rarer, and the ones that slip through get flagged early. For a one-page overview, the Continuity report lists contradictions, drifting stats and promises still waiting, with the top 5 to fix first. You still write every chapter yourself.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I find canon contradictions manually?+

You can. It takes about a full weekend for 50 chapters. A canon check cuts that to an evening of reviewing flagged issues.

    Will readers notice the retcon?+

Some will. They will forgive a clean retcon faster than they will forgive ongoing drift. Pick your battle.

    What is a canon contradiction?+

It is a fact in one chapter that conflicts with an earlier one, such as a rank going backwards, a dead character appearing, or a changed family relationship. Stats, locations and relationships are the most common.

Does PlotWrite write the fixes for me?+

No. PlotWrite reads your story and proposes a fix as a diff; nothing changes until you accept it. Checking continuity is back-office help under Royal Road's AI policy, so it needs no AI tag.
