How much can you earn writing webnovels in 12 months?
Month 1: launch on Royal Road. Stockpile 20 chapters before going live, then post daily. Target: 200 followers and your first 3–6 Patreon patrons by day 30. Realistic income: $15–$40.
Months 2–3: maintain daily posting. Target: 800–1,500 followers, 12–25 patrons. Realistic income: $80–$180/month.
Month 4: book one ends at ~120,000 words. Begin editing for Amazon KDP. Keep daily posting on book two.
Month 6: KDP launch for book one. Target: 2,500–4,000 followers on Royal Road, 35–75 patrons. Launch month KDP spike: $400–$1,500. Patreon: $180–$400. Combined: $580–$1,900.
Months 7–9: KDP residual settles at $80–$300/month. Patreon grows to 70–120 patrons ($350–$700). Combined: $430–$1,000.
Month 10: book two completes. Second KDP launch. Combined launch month: $1,200–$3,500.
Month 12: steady state at 6,000–9,000 followers. Patreon $600–$1,400. KDP residual on two books $250–$700. Combined: $850–$2,100/month, with another launch spike every ~5 months.
This roadmap assumes daily posting. Cut the cadence to twice weekly and every milestone shifts 6–9 months later.
Why does posting cadence matter so much?
Royal Road's Rising Stars list is the single biggest follower-growth lever in web fiction. The algorithm evaluates ratings-per-chapter, follower velocity, and comment activity inside the first 2–6 weeks of a serial's life. Daily posting hits those signals. Twice-weekly posting does not.
The difference compounds. A daily-posting serial typically reaches 1,500 followers in 60 days. A twice-weekly serial reaches the same threshold in 12–18 months. Same writer, same prose quality, same story — 8x slower follower growth, which means 8x slower income growth.
The problem is that daily posting at 2,500–3,000 words per chapter requires 3+ hours per day of hand-drafting, every day, indefinitely. Most writers quit inside 90 days. Pick a cadence you can actually keep, and plan your chapters ahead so each writing session starts with a clear beat list instead of a blank page.
How do you keep a serial consistent at daily cadence?
I learned the hard way that speed without memory breaks a serial. My own Royal Road launch was mostly AI-drafted: 81,381 words in a week, and readers soon caught the continuity errors that came with it. The write-up is at /blog/i-wrote-81000-words-in-one-week-royal-road-case-study.
The workflow that holds up is different. Write your chapters yourself and let AI do the remembering and checking: who holds what rank as of which chapter, which promises are still open, whether the new chapter contradicts the old ones. Royal Road treats that as back-office help, so it needs no AI tag (Royal Road AI policy). If you do draft with AI, Royal Road asks you to tag the story, and you still need to read across chapters, not one at a time.
Plenty of writers hand-draft successfully, but daily hand-drafting is where many burn out by month four. Use AI to protect consistency rather than to multiply word count.
Every income path on this roadmap depends on readers sticking around for years. PlotWrite keeps your serial consistent across hundreds of chapters and checks each one before it goes live.
plotwrite.ink learns your writing style, keeps track of your characters and world rules, and can draft the next chapter in your voice with your Claude or ChatGPT plan or your own AI key. Built for Royal Road, Wattpad, and serial authors who post weekly.

Why use PlotWrite instead of Sudowrite or ChatGPT?
Three reasons. First, the Story brain: a page per character, place, item, skill and faction, built from the chapters you have already written. Facts are timed by chapter ("Silver rank from ch 9"), so you can see any character as of chapter N, and new facts wait in your Inbox for approval. No more pasting character sheets into prompts, and far fewer 'wait, what color were her eyes?' comments on Royal Road.
Second, the Canon check. It finds contradictions (a rank going backwards, a brother becoming a cousin, a dead character walking), shows both quotes side by side and offers a one-click fix previewed as a diff. The In-Between also warns when a plot thread has gone quiet.
Third, optional drafting. Draft with AI works in your Style DNA voice, and Auto-write (Architect plan) can draft a run of chapters on your own AI. Nothing enters a chapter without your review, and the run stops on canon problems. It is labelled for what it is: AI-written text that needs Royal Road's AI tag if you post it, and that you should read across chapters before you do.
The 7-day free trial (no card) includes everything. You connect your own AI (your ChatGPT or Claude subscription through the connector, OpenRouter, an API key, or a local model) and pay your provider for what you use. PlotWrite never charges for AI.
